Although Naples was a pretty good EP, it was our live shows where we had the most musical fun. Audiences back then would often dance to bands in clubs, not just gaze and listen. As a house favorite at the 9:30 club and at dc Space a few blocks away, our songs tended to go on for a while. When bassist Terry Baker and drummer Lorenzo Jones got the groove, the interplay between the 3 original band members Michael Barron, Susan Mumford and Bob Boilen, became so much better. Below are some examples of that live interplay, including our reunion show for the closing of the 9:30 club’s original 930 F St. location.
Take Me to Paris - w/ Julius Hemphill (sax)
New Years Eve 1980/81 at dc Space. After the World Saxophone Quartet performed upstairs in the loft, Julius brought his saxophone downstairs and joined us at midnight on a song he had never heard.
It was an inspired performance.

Western Romance - w/ Laurie Anderson (violin)
We were the opening band for a Laurie Anderson performance at what is now the now the Building Museum, then known as the Pension Building. We asked Laurie to join us on a tune, went over the tune in the men’s room with her. Though this isn’t Laurie’s strength to play on someone else’s tune, she was gracious enough to join in. Not a stellar performance, though for us it was memorable.
Wave at the Nice Man
We were the first band to play the 9:30 club, and 14 years after we broke up we were asked to play for the closing of the clubs original location. It was remarkable how we not only remembered the tunes, but actually played pretty well, despite the fact that it was 2 in the morning. This tune had never been recorded till this show and was released on a CD documenting the club’s final week..
